What do you think of when you think of organizing? Is it all about function over form? Some might think so, but I suggest that the marriage of form and function is where the magic lies. I often say we are “human animals” and we can’t forget that we have instinctive responses to our environments. Our responses and therefore preferences vary widely but as much as possible need to be respected. We experience true joy in our sensual response to things. Colours that energize us or make use feel calm and relaxed, textures that invite touch, forms that cause us to pause and simply admire them, lighting that sets a mood or adds sparkle to a room.
I am thrilled to share some examples of beauty and basics colliding, from two recent events -The Canadian Home Furnishings Market – a trade event, and The Interior Design Show – catering to trade and the public. In the photo above, the cubby bookcase on the left side, from Huppe, is also a filing cabinet. I adore this double-duty piece that keeps files handy while offering a display space for visitors to enjoy. The colour, somewhere between ochre and chartreuse, offers a grounded energy and plays well with the warm wood finish.
Here is an inspiring collection of fun and functional furniture. Not all items are in stores yet, so keep an eye out for them. They are certainly a sign of good things to come.

Don’t forget the fifth wall! Carpets are an ideal way to add art to condos with fewer walls. Carpets warm up an interior and soften sounds. Click on this link for the W Studio site and an image of the carpet without me in the way!

And finally from Nomo Creations, a father and son Canadian design and manufacture team comes this creative, made in Canada, coffee table.
And last, but most definitely not least was the collection on show from Resource Furniture, importers of space saving Italian furniture that is not only impressive in its unique design, but equally amazing in its ease of operation. If I ever contemplate a condo, this will be my first stop.
